EU Commission requests Opinions on safety of resorcinol

The European Commission has adopted for consideration a review regarding the priority list of 28 substances (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 that are not prohibited or restricted for use in cosmetic products), whose properties have potential destructive actions on the human endocrine system. Resorcinol (CAS No. 108-46-3, EC No. 203-585-2) is one of them.

The European Commission delegated SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON CONSUMER SAFETY (SCCS) within 9 months (accepted 04.02.2020) to review the safe concentrations of Resorcinol in cosmetic products and  the possibility of finding an alternative.

For now:

in cosmetic products Resorcinol (CAS No. 108-46-3, EC No. 203-585-2) chemical name: 1,3-benzenediol and 1,3-dihydroxybenzene is approved for use as an oxidative dye in hair and eyelash products in concentrations of 1.25% (Annex IV / 22 a, b; Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009), in addition to lotions and shampoos at a concentration of up to 0.5% (Annex IV / 22 c; Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009).
